George H. Ziener

George Ziener is Vice President of Kunz and Company and is a knowledge management, learning systems design, and educational specialist with a 30 year career in Federal and private, not-for-profit institutions.  Mr. Ziener is the team's leader for client services involving education, training, and instructional design in substance abuse, health, and related issues.

Mr. Ziener has held several senior positions in Federal service and served as the Chief, Instructional Development Section for the Environmental Protection Agency and as Assistant Project Officer for the National Training Center of the Special Action Office for Drug Abuse Prevention, Executive Office of the President.  Mr. Ziener served as Special Assistant to the Director of the National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse, where he restructured the grant review process, and as an Education Administrator for the National Institute on Drug Abuse, where he developed, implemented, and administered long range national training activities through grants and contracts to 53 State and Territorial agencies.  Mr. Ziener served as Director of the National Audiovisual Center of the Department of Commerce's National Technical Information Service.  In this role, he oversaw policy development and implementation to increase the volume of interagency services and expand the number of media holdings and products.  He was the developer of the Federal Training Mall, a centralized, web-based online source of Federal training opportunities, course information, and related services.

He is currently providing program planning and grand development support for the District of Columbia Public Library System toward the development of a life long learning delivery system.  He is also developing curriculum and other learning products to support the Family Strengthening Initiative of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.

Mr. Ziener has held a number of consulting and advising positions to advance the state of the art in substance abuse learning systems and in technology assisted learning in general.  For the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, he provided long range planning and implementation designs for a national prevention training system.  For the National Institutes of Health, Mr. Ziener advised on the planning and operation of its Computer User Resource Center that provided computer training, onsite technical support services and a tutorial center for managers, scientists, other professionals, and support staff.  For the Department of Labor, he developed training and media support materials for the Instructional Technology Demonstration Center, which provided support for the development and evaluation of vocational education and training programs.  For State Boards of Education, Mr. Ziener developed and administered a nationwide alcohol education network and program of technical assistance for elementary, middle, and high schools.

Mr. Ziener has a distinguished record of volunteer public, community, and professional service.  He served on several National American Red Cross groups, including the President's Task Force on AIDS, and he continues to serve as part of the Emergency Services/Disaster Team.  Mr. Ziener has also chaired several committees and task forces for the District of Columbia Chapter of the American Red Cross.  He has served as a board member or trustee for a number of not-for-profit organizations in the Washington area, including:  Episcopal Church Home, Inc.; Friends of Music at the Smithsonian; Federation of the Friends of the DC Public Library System, and the Washington Revels Advisory Board. He serves as the president of the Friends of the Tenly Library.  Mr. Ziener is also a member of Americans Communicating Electronically (ACE), the Federal Educational Technology Association, and of the Council of Greater City Schools, Distance Learning Advisory Group.

Mr. Ziener received a B.A. in Philosophy from St. Paul's College and undertook graduate studies in theology and educational technology at The Catholic University of America .
