Learning Systems Design

WHY:  Once changes in organization process or practice occur, there is often a requirement to help everyone adapt their own work.  Because people learn and apply learning in different ways, learning systems design expertise can help translate good intentions into solid performance.

WHAT:   Performance improvement is neither magical nor a fad, but rather is simply very hard work.  To abstract upon some 50 years of empirical research on the question of how change takes place, we note that in successful change, four basic conditions are met:

  • Information about the change and the process for it and about how and why all of this is taking place is communicated to everyone
  • Evidence that the change is likely to be effective, work better than available alternatives, and doesn't have significant, negative side effects is available and communicated
  • Resources, financial and human, are available to support implementation of the change
  • Rewards are present for change and the human dynamics of change, e.g., individual fears, resistance, and anxiety are addressed (Backer, 1997)
